Ministry of Coal

The Ministry of Coal is a key ministry under the Government of India, responsible for the development, production, supply, and distribution of coal and lignite in the country.
It plays a vital role in ensuring India’s energy security, as coal remains one of the main sources of power generation and industrial fuel.

The Ministry formulates policies and strategies to optimize coal extraction, improve safety and sustainability in mining, and ensure environmental compliance. It also oversees the functioning of major public sector undertakings (PSUs) and organizations engaged in coal mining and coal-based industries, including Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and the Coal Controller’s Organization (CCO).

By promoting efficiency, modernization, and private participation in mining operations, the Ministry aims to meet the growing energy needs of India while supporting the government’s goals for clean energy transition and economic growth.
