The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is one of the most important economic ministries under the Government of India, responsible for formulating and implementing policies that promote trade, commerce, and industrial growth.
It plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s position in the global economy, enhancing exports, improving ease of doing business, and attracting domestic and foreign investment.
The Ministry works to boost industrial production, promote entrepreneurship, and ensure the development of small and medium enterprises through policy reforms, incentives, and infrastructure development.
It comprises two key departments:
- Department of Commerce (DoC) – Handles foreign trade, export promotion, and international trade agreements.
- Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) – Oversees industrial policy, FDI promotion, intellectual property rights (IPR), and startup ecosystem development.
Together, these departments aim to make India a globally competitive and self-reliant economy through innovation, trade facilitation, and industrial modernization.
