Core Role: Regional research & trials, OPD services, medicinal plant surveys, training, and publications.

What Are Regional Research Institutes (RRIs)?

Regional Research Institutes (RRIs) are state-level centres that execute AYUSH research, education, and public-health outreach. They act as the field arms of national councils, running clinical trials, drug standardization, medicinal plant surveys, and large outreach programs at the regional/local level.

In simple terms: RRIs are AYUSH’s regional branches—bringing research and healthcare closer to where people live.

Geographic Distribution

RRIs are placed across the North, South, East, West, and North-East zones to cover India’s biodiversity and cultural diversity. Each RRI reports to the respective Council HQ (New Delhi/Chennai), enabling region-specific research and rapid community outreach.

Funding & Administration

Funded by the Ministry of AYUSH via the Councils under IMR.

  • Collaboration with State AYUSH Directorates, universities, and district hospitals.
  • Many RRIs also function as Coordinating Centres for smaller units.
