Ministry of Ayush

About the Ministry of AYUSH (MoA)

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, is dedicated to the development, education, and promotion of India’s traditional systems of medicine — Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy. Established in November 2014 as a separate ministry, AYUSH evolved from the earlier Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISM&H) created in 1995 and later renamed the Department of AYUSH in 2003.

The Ministry serves as the central authority for policy formulation, implementation, and coordination of all matters related to traditional healthcare systems in India. It aims to mainstream AYUSH practices into the national healthcare framework and to make India a global leader in holistic and preventive healthcare.

AYUSH embodies India’s ancient wisdom of wellness, emphasizing prevention over cure, and balancing body, mind, and spirit. Through its numerous councils, research institutes, and educational bodies, the ministry works to strengthen AYUSH education, standardize medicine quality, enhance research, and provide affordable health services to citizens across rural and urban areas.

Globally, the Ministry of AYUSH represents India’s rich legacy of healing traditions, collaborating with international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and promoting AYUSH therapies and products through diplomatic and trade channels.

The Ministry also manages central sector schemes, such as the National AYUSH Mission (NAM), to expand infrastructure, support drug standardization, and ensure accessibility of AYUSH services through health and wellness centers. It also oversees key initiatives like AYUSH Wellness Centres, International Cooperation Scheme, Ayurgyan (Education & Training), and Ayush Oushadhi Gunvatta Evam Uttpadan Samvardhan Yojana for quality and capacity enhancement.

Guided by its vision — “to position AYUSH systems as the preferred choice of living and practice for a healthy India” — the ministry continues to integrate traditional knowledge with modern research to achieve the goals of universal health coverage and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
