The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is the nodal ministry of the Government of India for maritime policy, ports, shipping, and inland waterways. It steers port-led development, coastal shipping, shipbuilding & repair, logistics efficiency, and multimodal connectivity to strengthen India’s maritime economy and global trade competitiveness.
The Ministry drives flagship initiatives such as Sagarmala (port-led development), modernization of major ports, development of National Waterways, and promotion of shipbuilding, ship repair, cruise tourism, and coastal community development.
🎯 Mandate
- Formulate and implement policies for ports, shipping, and inland waterways.
- Modernize major ports, enhance capacity, digitization, and PPP-led infrastructure.
- Promote coastal shipping, Ro-Ro/Ro-Pax, cruise tourism, and maritime logistics corridors.
- Develop and manage National Waterways and terminal infrastructure for cargo & passenger movement.
- Strengthen shipbuilding, ship repair, dredging, and maritime skilling & safety.
- Improve ease of doing business through single-window systems and port community platforms.
- Ensure maritime safety, security, and environmental compliance (pollution control, green ports).
- Foster coastal community development and livelihoods under Sagarmala.
