🏛️ Description
The Ministry of Power is the apex body of the Government of India responsible for the development, regulation, and management of the country’s electricity sector. It oversees generation, transmission, and distribution of power, and ensures reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply for all citizens.
The Ministry formulates national policies and strategies for energy efficiency, grid modernization, and renewable integration, while also supervising central public sector undertakings (CPSUs) in the power domain. Through flagship programs like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Saubhagya, and Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), it has significantly expanded access and reliability of electricity in both urban and rural India.
🎯 Mandate
- Formulate and implement national policies for power generation, transmission, and distribution.
- Promote universal access to reliable and affordable electricity across India.
- Oversee planning and development of thermal, hydro, and transmission projects.
- Encourage renewable energy integration, smart grids, and energy storage solutions.
- Coordinate with State Electricity Boards and regulatory bodies for efficient sectoral governance.
- Supervise central PSUs and statutory authorities engaged in power generation and transmission.
- Promote energy efficiency and demand-side management under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
- Monitor reforms in distribution and tariff rationalization to reduce losses and improve service delivery.
