🏛️ Description
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is the apex policy-making body of the Government of India for road transport, national highways, and road safety. It plans, develops, maintains, and regulates the country’s National Highways network while setting standards for vehicles, emissions, and traffic management. The Ministry also drives digital platforms like Parivahan for citizen services (licensing, registration, permits) and coordinates large-scale corridor development to boost logistics efficiency.
🎯 Mandate
- Plan, construct, expand, and maintain National Highways and expressways.
- Formulate policies on road transport, vehicle standards, fitness, and emissions.
- Improve road safety through engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency care.
- Enable seamless movement of passengers and freight; reduce logistics cost via multimodal connectivity.
- Promote digital governance through VAHAN & SARATHI (Parivahan portal) and other e-initiatives.
- Facilitate PPPs, innovative financing (TOT/InvIT), and asset monetisation for highway development.
- Coordinate with States/UTs and agencies for uniform traffic regulations and capacity building.
