Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDONER)

🏛️ Description

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MoDONER) is the nodal ministry of the Government of India for planning, coordinating, and accelerating the socio-economic development of India’s Eight North Eastern States — Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

The Ministry works to bridge regional gaps by funding critical infrastructure, connectivity, livelihood, and capacity-building projects; enabling private investment; and strengthening institutions. It also provides policy support and inter-ministerial coordination to ensure that central schemes are effectively implemented in the North East.

🎯 Mandate

  • Formulate and coordinate policies and programs for balanced development of the North Eastern Region (NER).
  • Plan and fund priority projects in connectivity (roads, bridges, air, rail), power, health, education, water & sanitation, and rural livelihoods.
  • Oversee and support development initiatives through bodies like the North Eastern Council (NEC).
  • Facilitate investment, entrepreneurship, and value-chain development (agri-horticulture, handloom & handicrafts, bamboo, tourism).
  • Improve last-mile delivery and convergence of central/state schemes across NER.
  • Promote skill development, start-ups, and innovation tailored to the region’s strengths.
  • Strengthen disaster resilience, sustainability, and climate-sensitive planning in hilly and border areas.
