🏛️ Description
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) is an economic ministry of the Government of India responsible for policy, promotion, and sustainable growth of the capital goods, automobile & auto components, heavy engineering, and machine tools sectors. It supports domestic manufacturing, technology upgradation, and Industry 4.0 adoption to strengthen India’s industrial base and global competitiveness.
MHI steers flagship programmes like FAME India for e-mobility, PLI – Automobiles & Auto Components, testing & homologation infrastructure (NATRAX/NATRiP), and initiatives for modernization of capital goods and MSME participation in heavy engineering value chains.
🎯 Mandate
- Formulate and implement policies to develop the capital goods, automotive and heavy engineering ecosystem.
- Promote domestic manufacturing, technology transfer, R&D, and skilling aligned to Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
- Lead e-mobility adoption through FAME India (charging infrastructure, EV buses, two/three/four-wheelers).
- Administer the PLI Scheme for Automobiles & Auto Components and related innovation/grant programmes.
- Develop national testing & homologation infrastructure (NATRAX, GARC, ICAT, etc.).
- Support modernization of machine tools, heavy electricals, process plant equipment and other capital-goods sub-sectors.
- Foster sustainability and circularity: energy efficiency, advanced materials, and clean manufacturing practices.
- Oversee select CPSEs and autonomous bodies under the Ministry and guide their restructuring where required.
