🏛️ Description

The Ministry of Jal Shakti is the nodal ministry of the Government of India responsible for the integrated management of water resources, drinking water, and sanitation across the country. Established in 2019 by merging the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, it aims to ensure access to safe water and clean sanitation for every citizen.

The Ministry oversees the conservation of rivers, sustainable groundwater management, flood control, and the implementation of major national programs such as the Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal) and the Namami Gange Programme. It also promotes participatory water management, climate resilience, and the efficient use of water resources in agriculture and industries.

🎯 Mandate

  • Formulate and implement policies related to water resources, sanitation, and drinking water supply.
  • Ensure safe and adequate drinking water through the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).
  • Promote integrated water resource management and groundwater conservation.
  • Coordinate river basin development and interstate water-sharing agreements.
  • Rejuvenate the Ganga and its tributaries under the Namami Gange Programme.
  • Oversee flood management, irrigation projects, and hydrology programs.
  • Promote rural sanitation and hygiene through the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen).
  • Encourage community participation and sustainable technologies in water conservation.
